Review: 2017 Subaru WRX and WRX STI

                The 2017 Subaru WRX and WRX STI continues from last year’s revisions. It continues to offer the best mix of usability and performance on the road today. The WRX is perfectly at home pushing the limit on a back road, or keeping you safe on a snowy winter day.  The 2017 WRX comes with the same turbocharged engine from last year’s model. This engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger, and intercooler, and direct injection. This engine is rated for 268 HP and 258 ft-lb of torque. This can be paired with either a CVT or 6-speed manual transmission. The CVT uses eight preset ratios when in sport sharp to feel more like a manual, whereas in intelligent mode it settles back to a traditional fuel-sipping CVT.

 The 2017 WRX STI features the same tried and true 2.5-liter engine as it has for years. It is rated at 305HP, and is mated to the same 6-speed manual transmission. It features a driver controlled center differential, a helical limited-slip front differential and a Torsen limited-slip rear differential. You also receive bigger Brembo brakes, a stiffer suspension, and hydraulic-boost steering.

 

 The WRX and STI have already featured a boxy style. It builds of design principals from its smaller Impreza brother.  The body has massive air intakes, a functional hood scoop, and flaired bumpers. Entry trims feature a 17” alloy wheels, with Premium models and up featuring 18” wheels. If you’ve always wanted a WRX with a huge wing, you must opt for an STI, though you can trade this out with a lip spoiler if you wish.

 Subaru always has had a firm dedication to safety, and this trend follows even on their enthusiast vehicles. Every WRX and STI features standard backup camera, symmetrical all-wheel drive, frontal air bags, driver’s knee airbags, side-curtain airbags, and a front-seat side airbags. Limited CVT model WRX’s can be equip Subaru’s eyesight technology. This features adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking for both forward and reverse (new this year), lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. This earns models equipped with his package a Top Safety Pick plus from the IIHS.

 The Starlink infotainment system with 6.2’ touch screen is now standard in every WRX and STI model. This means that every WRX and STI will feature backup camera, Bluetooth phone and audio, HD radio, and climate control.

 You can also opt for an upgraded 7” Starlink infotainment system that adds navigation, nine speaker Harmon/Kardon audio, and proximity key.

 When you opt for a WRX limited you will be treated with an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, Leather seats, and LED low-beam headlights.

 

 For the enthusiast who wants almost every available option, The WRX Limited has you covered. The model comes standard with blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, proximity key, push button start, navigation, 7” touch sreen, and the 9 speaker Harmon/Kardon audio system. You are also treated to a eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and a moonroof. Finally, you will also get the option of the classic rally style large spoiler, or a low-profile trunk spoiler.
